Tremella fuciformis, also known as snow fungus or silver ear mushroom due to its colour, is a type of edible fungus with a structure resembling coral or algae. It is a parasitic mushroom, growing on other fungi that thrive on dead hardwood trunks.

Originating from the tropical regions of Asia, it has been used for centuries as a “tonic for body and mind”. As a relatively rare mushroom, its use was historically reserved for noble and imperial families, often symbolising wealth and longevity.

Due to its ability to enhance cell hydration in the body (acting similarly to hyaluronic acid), women in Chinese tradition frequently consumed it to maintain a radiant and youthful complexion.

Rich in beta-glucans – for deep hydration

Beta-glucans are naturally occurring dietary fibre, which in tremella have a specific form and structure, making them particularly effective.

These natural compounds enable tremella to act as a highly effective moisturising ingredient, with properties similar to or even surpassing those of hyaluronic acid, the standard moisturiser in cosmetics. Due to their smaller molecular size compared to hyaluronic acid, tremella’s polysaccharides easily penetrate the skin, providing deep hydration.

Due to its naturally occurring active compounds, tremella is considered a valuable ingredient used across various industries, including:

in cosmetics: primarily for its moisturising effects and promotion of skin elasticity, it is used in the preparation of serums, creams, face masks, and similar products,
in culinary applications: with its neutral taste, it is added to modern dishes mainly to enhance the texture of meals – it resembles algae or coral in appearance, and when thermally processed, it becomes pleasantly smooth and slightly chewy while retaining a certain crispness,
in nutrition or as a component of dietary supplements, as it is exceptionally rich in nutrients – polysaccharides (especially beta-glucans), proteins, vitamins, dietary fibre, and more.
